I’ve mentioned before how beautiful Switzerland is. So it didn’t take too much convincing when my friend said she wanted to visit Zurich! As it’s a relatively short flight from London, we decided to go for a 3 day weekend trip. I thought I’d share out itinerary for anyone planning to visit the city themselves!
We took a 9am flight from London Heathrow to Zurich with BA, arriving at about 12 noon local time. We actually booked our trip through Expedia and got a great deal for £280 each for flight and hotel.
Getting to Zurich from the airport
Once we got through customs, we got the train straight from the airport to the city centre, which cost us £5 each. The train takes about an hour – but there might be faster ones you can get!
Explore the city
Take the afternoon to wander around the city – it’s not a huge place so everything is easily reachable on foot. As we visited in December, there were plenty of Christmas markets to visit. During any other time, you’ll find plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy.
There are two halves of the city, separated by the river in the middle. There are plenty of winding cobbled streets on both sides that are worth visiting, and Lindenhof Hill with its beautiful view of the city centre.
Eat Cheese Fondue
Now is the perfect time to get some food, and being in Switzerland, what better choice than a cheese fondue? You’ll find plenty of restaurants around the city offering fondue options – we got a cheese and truffle one which was divine. It is pricey though – at about 30 francs each.
If you fancy something more health conscious, the amazing BEETNUT cafe is a 20 minute walk from the city centre, and provides plenty of healthy veggie and vegan options!
Take a trip to Mount Rigi
Who goes to Switzerland and doesn’t spend a day up in the snowy mountains? Exactly! Get up early and head to the main train station in Zurich. Here you can buy your ticket and catch a train to Mount Rigi for the day!
Note that you’ll need to get a second train up the mountain when you arrive – its best to buy these in advance before you go (cost: £55 at time of exchange)
You’ll need to get the train from Zurich to ‘Arth Goldeau’ (which will cost about £45 for a return ticket). The likelihood is the train itself will actually be heading to Milan, Italy – so keep an eye out for this! If you get stuck, you can ask someone at the station – they were super friendly and helpful with us.
Once you arrive at Goldeau (the journey can vary from 55 min to 1 hour 30, depending on which train you get) you’ll need to follow the signs to the Rigi Railway. Here, you’ll catch the cogwheel train up to the top of the mountain! Enjoy gorgeous scenery on your way up, which takes about 40 minutes.
There is plenty to do at the top of Mount Rigi, from hiking trails, to winter sports. And one thing you simply cannot miss is the sunset!

Experience the nightlife
One thing I always love to do when visiting a new city is experience the nightlife! There are plenty of wine and cocktail bars in the centre of Zurich, but if you’re into clubs or more lively spots, then you should head to Langstrasse, where you’ll find a street packed full of different clubs that are frequented by locals and tourists alike.
Wander by the lake
Make the most of your final morning by getting up early, having a coffee and breakfast at one of the nearby cafe’s and then taking a stroll along the edge of the lake.
Relax at the Thermalbad & Spa
What better way to spend your last few hours in Zurich than relaxing at the gorgeous Thermalbad & Spa. Book a visit and any treatments you like, and make use of the gorgeous roman style spa. Plus enjoy, the highlight of the spa – the rooftop thermal pool which overlooks the city with a beautiful mountain backdrop in the distance.
